I therefore suggested to Mr Kinder that he ought to make requisition for two if not three more such presses- and also for the appliances necessary to increase the melting power of the mint in like proportion.

Mr. Kinder accordingly (in Dresden) did make the necessary requisition and I inclose it. Nevertheless, before suggesting that this increased expense be incurred the main question has to be considered viz:- ensuring that all deficiencies in the mechanical power of the Mint and in its standard of perfection be brought up to the highest standard, what prospect is thereby opened of procuring for the Mint either at once or in a reasonable time sufficient work to pay its expenses?

If those expenses are likely to continue unproductive, the further maintenance of the Mint by the Colony must evidently be a waste of money; and consequently it is incumbent
